The dental implant process

At University Associates in Dentistry we begin with an examination with Dr. Delfs.  The implant process is delivered with a team approach with the doctor, patient, and surgeon.  This session is for you to meet Dr. Delfs and ask any questions.  We will also use this appointment to gather information on the patient's medical and dental history.  We will perform a comprehensive  clinical examination of the entire mouth and missing tooth area.  The clinical exam should also include specific X-rays and any necessary impressions for diagnostic models.

After assessing the patient, a comprehensive treatment plan can be devised.  Any preliminary work may be diagnosed (such as any hygiene or periodontal therapy, simple restorative treatment and pre-restorative whitening) before placement of the implant.

From that point, implants are surgically placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia. The length of the healing time is based on the quality and quantity of bone, as well as the type of implant placed.  After adequate healing is allowed to occur, the implant can be used to support a crown, bridge, or denture.
